Introduction and Spread of Invasive Species

BCPC Price:   £35.00

Proceedings No. 81
Chaired by David Alford and Georg Backhaus

Invasive species are considered to be the second largest reason for biodiversity loss worldwide and international environmental policy and legislation have begun to refelct this fact.

This three-day Symposium, organised jointly with Deutsche Phytomedizinsche Gesellschaft (DPG) and BCPC aims to widen our views across the whole spectrum of alien invasive species and identify appropriate ways of handling such species.

The BCPC International Conference - Crop Science & Technology 2006

BCPC Price:   £35.00

The annual BCPC Confenrece held in Glasgow is the leading intenrational event for all those involved in the world-wide crop production industry.
These short papers include all the platform presentations made during the 2006 Conference which covers the three themes of:
  • Global aspects of crop protection. What are the risks? - crop production is integral in the global production of food. Food must satisfy consumer demand but the risks of crop protection products must also be evaluated and managed and the risks communicated to the general public.
  • Factors affecting crop production - soil structure, fertility and soil micro-flora are key to healthy and profitable crop production.
  • Global food supply. What is the problem? - modern consumer taste and expectations mean food producers and retailers are operating in a global market place. This puts increasing demands throughout the entire food chain from plough to plate.

The BCPC International Congress - Crop Science & Technology 2003

BCPC Price:   £85.00

The proceedings from this inaugural congress held in Glasgow, UK include all four keynote presentations plus all the platform and poster paper presentations.

The programme was designed around three major themes:
  • Crop protection - all aspects of crop protection in both temperate and tropical climates were addressed. This included weed science and pest & disease issues. Advances in spray application technology and precision crop management were also covered;
  • Crop production and the food chain - this theme addressed topics such as minimising the risk of pesticide residues in food, crop performance with reduced input systems and biotechnology approaches to optimise crop development and quality. Farmland biodiversity and the impact of an enlarged EU community also featured;
  • Environment & regulation - the environmental impact of GM crops remains a contentious issue, so the costs , benefits , safety aspects and regulation a decade after their commercialisation provided much debate.

Biotech 2020

BCPC Price:   £25.00

Crop Biotechnology in the World of 2020

The world is entering a golden age of plant science, with the UK at the forefront, but without clearer government strategies, the scientific and commercial benefits for this country could be lost irreversibly. This was the main conclusion for the UK Biotech 2020, a BCPC Forum, which brought together over 50 independent experts and senior representatives from government, research organisations, academia, international institutions, industry and commerce. This 48pp Report from the Forum, held in February 2003, considered how developments in crop biotechnology science might interact with the key drivers which are already shaping the world of 2020.

Also contained is a Post-Forum Commentary prepared by BCPC - this analysis the various issues and their likely future implications for the UK and Europe.

Slugs and Snails: Agricultural, Veterinary and Environmental Perspectives

BCPC Price:   £35.00

Proceedings No. 80
Chaired by Georges Dussart

Molluscs tend to be the Cinderella of biocontrol research, despite the fact that they cause enormous amounts of economic, medical and veterinary damage to human societies.

This symposium addressed issues of classification, economics, physiology, behaviour and integrated pest management with particular attention paid to applied aspects. The importance of the evolutionary context and the value of biochemistry and molecular biology in the service of control are also considered.

The Global Challenge - Sustainable Food Production

BCPC Price:   £15.00

Proceedings No. 79
Edited by P Mitton and M N Hall

The world faces the challenge of how food production can meet consumer's expectations of safety, nutrition, quality, price, environmental concerns and social issues.
At the same time there are the challenges imposed by legislation, population dynamics, climate change, international trade, diminishing resources and the ever-changing nature of pests and diseases.
The Symposium explores how market demands have developed and how they differ throughout the world.

The World's Worst Weeds

BCPC Price:   £15.00

Proceedings No. 77
Chaired by Charles Riches

Annual worldwide losses to weeds are estimated to be 10-15% of attainable production of crops, with greater losses being suffered in developing countries.

This symposium considered the biology and control of many of the world's weeds and reviews their status and future prospects for control. Attention is drawn to herbicide resistance, weedy relatives of cereals, the increase in importance of some species and preventative measures based on current cropping systems and agronomic practice.
